Unlike Dummy Models (For instance, Leica M3 Dummies) which sometimes only has their exterior body chassis as well as a companion dummy lens, where mostly they are having an almost empty interior together with just a front lens element mounted on the dummy lens. Cutaway Display Units demand more attentive in their details and usually they have elevated level in technical merit in an eventual cutaway model. Important components and mechanical parts that deserve viewer attention inside the camera are carefully being cut-out from the body chassis to show the involving mechanisma dn structures. Overall, I would still think most of them are still used from factory reject finished product as the basis of construction of these cutaway models. As comparison to dummy bodies, cutaway display models are not very often being produced in large quantity. Most have been serialized and they make excellent display model for decorative display in private living room and even for corporate office decorative item.
One of the earliest avaiblle cutway Leica-M model was the Leica M3 Cutway Model. A shown unit was a rare and very early series which has recorded S/N from 700000~700800. Unlike later Leica-M cutaway models, the M3 early cutaway display unit has lamost stripped down to bare minimum to enable see through effect to its interior.
RELATIVE: Differences between DUMMY Models and Cutaway models. On the other hand, Japanese camera manufacturers were more fond of using transparent camera to show the internal structure of the specific camera type. A good example of this kind of display was the Canon T90 Trans model.
