In order to be able to offer a less expensive camera, Leitz brought out the M2 which cost 20% less than an M3. Although at first it did not have a self-timer or the automatic resetting of the frame counter,theM2 was a huge success even among professionals not only because of its price but also for the viewfinder which was set for 35,50 and 90mm lenses, the most frequently used for reportage.in 1966, 276 Leica M2 were produced which were predisposed for an electric motor drive made by Leitz of New York, These cameras with serial numbers from 1,163,771 to 1,164,047, had the engraving M2-M on the top plate, Upon request, some camera of this series were modified but without any indication.
