More info from the web regarding the Leica LUXUS camera, plus notes from James Lager the Leica historian:
The Luxus series are Leica cameras from 1929–1933, finished in 24 ct gold plating and covered in lizard or crocodile skin, representing the top-of-the-line models before later conversions, only 95 Luxus cameras (Model A) were made; even fewer (around 4) were the Leica II Luxus (with built-in rangefinder and interchangeable lenses)
Historical Significance & Technical Details:
- These Luxus variants were entry-deluxe versions of Leica I/II, customized with a gold finish and exotic leather, often special-ordered
- The Leica II Luxus II is particularly prized for its early rangefinder design with interchangeable lenses, a feature shared with only four known cameras
- One “last ever produced” Luxus II (serial 98248, Oct 1932) was rediscovered in a flea market and later featured in Leitz auction archives
Summary
The Luxus Leica series — particularly the Leica II Luxus II — are among the rarest and most collectible Leica cameras in existence. Their rarity (≤ 4 of the II variant), luxurious gold-and-skin finish, original condition, and storied provenance (from early owners, Antiques Roadshow,to record-breaking auctions) ensure they chart at $500K–$1 million+ in today’s market.
The Notes to me from the Leica Historian Mr James Lager regarding this Leica Original Extremly Rare LUXUS camera:
Greetings Sam, after looking at the photos you sent, I believe this was at the NYC Leica Store during a visit by the owner of this Rare LUXUS camera. My notes indicate the camera number is 48435. The factory delivery records list this number as a LESSALUX meaning Leica with gilt FODIS rangefinder. The covering color is listed as green ( grun ). Three dates are written. 17.2.31 to Austellung (exhibition) in Leipzig Germany. 11.3.31 returned to Wetzlar. 13.3.31 shipped to Berlin. This was clearly a exhibition/demonstration model. I was not able to photograph the camera for my research files, Externally the camera appeared to be absolutely authentic. When this camera was shown in 1931 model C LUXUS were becoming available. See page 27 of my Book 1-Cameras for non standard Leica C LUXUS 48431 just 4 numbers from 48435. Thanks for sending the photos.
Stay in touch.
Jim.
Greetings Sam, yes, I remember seeing this camera in NYC years ago during the collector visit. Here is what it appears to say in the delivery book. The handwriting is lousy and difficult to read. Written LESSALUX grun 17.2.31 Austellung Leipzig Then zuk.11.3.31 and finally, 13.3.31 to Berlin. The reptile covering is green. The metal parts patina seems appropriate. Note the remaining gold plate down in the recess near the baseplate latch. The gold plating on the base attachment pin is worn away. I conclude the story as follows: shipped to the Leipzig Fair in February 1931 and shown as a sample. Returned (zuruck) on 11.3.31 and then sent to Berlin on 13.3.31. Therefore, a LESSALUX as a Leipzig sample and then on to a customer maybe in Berlin. ? It looks genuine to me.
Cheers, Jim.
