The electronic Leica R3 with an Electronic Leitz Copal CLS shutter was based on the Minolta XE-1. Three CdS cells allowed for spot metering.
The new name without the “flex” suffix, indicated that the new series of reflex cameras did not represent an evolution of the previous model.
All of the Leica R3s were produced in Portugal except 500 in a chrome finish from 1,446,001 to 1,446,100 and 1,450,000 which were made in Wetzlar.
Between 1977 and 1978 5,000 R3 Safari models were made with an olive green finish and beside the regular serial number, each had a special number engraved on the pen-taprism
